Take the Fall

Tomorrow, September 22, is the official start of the fall season. The shadows are changing, and there’s a new crispness to the air. Pretty soon we’ll be thinking about pumpkins and turkeys and raking leaves.

It’s a funny word, fall. Fall is a synonym for autumn, of course. We trip and fall sometimes or fall for a joke. Lumberjacks fell trees. Hopefully we don’t have to worry about nuclear fallout like in apocalyptic fiction. And none of us wants to take the fall for someone else’s misdeeds. Fall guys often fall on hard times. On the other hand, who doesn’t want to fall in love or fall for the hero of a romance novel?

Here’s hoping you fall into something good this fall season. Happy autumn!
