The Publishing Process at a Glance

I think it’s worth mentioning the overall steps in the publishing process for  those who may not know. A lot of people figure that you write a book, the publisher takes it, and that’s it. The work is done.

I wish it were that easy. In reality, there’s a lot more to it. Although there’s a ton of work that goes into creating the novel itself, I’ll start from the point where the book is done and already polished to the best of the writer’s ability. You can see a simplified version of what comes next in the chart below.

There is some variation among publishers, but this is the general way it works. Each step, like edits, can involve anywhere from two revisions to a dozen. There’s a lot of hard work involved, but it’s a labor of love.
