Fall In Love with One-Liners

Followers of my blog know I enjoy one-liners. These are short snippets from books that grab your interest, make you smile, or cause you to fan your face — sometimes all three at once. When I put out a call for one-liners from my fellow authors, I got an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. Thirty-one writers submitted the lines below.

They include Allie Quinn, Allyson Lindt, Annette Mardis, Clancy Nacht, Daisy Banks, Draven St. James, Elle Rush, Emma Weylin, Eva Lefoy, Gordon L. Rottman, Haley Whitehall, Houston Havens, Jessica E. Subject, Jianne Carlo, K. Vale, Laurel Richards, Layne Macadam, Leela Lou Dahlin, Michele Michael Rakes, Neil Plakcy, Paisley Brown, Pauline Saull, Rita Bay, Rosanna Leo, Shiloh Saddler, Sotia Lazu, Tami Lund, Tara Lain, Tara Quan, Whitley Gray, and Xakara.

Thank you to all these authors for participating and making this post so much fun.

Tara Lain shares her fave character

I’m thrilled to have author Tara Lain here today to talk about her favorite character. I was introduced to Tara’s work when I published my first novella through Loose Id several years ago. Then, as now, I mostly read m/f PNR and SFR, so when Tara managed to hook me with her m/m and menage contemporary romances, I recognized that she really had something special going for her as a storyteller. Since then, she has put out several bestsellers and continues to make a name for herself. So take it away, Tara!

The Characters that Breathe

Hi all. I’m so delighted to be here with Allie today — one of my favorite people! So, since we’re talking about faves, I thought I’d say something about my favorite characters. Readers always ask authors “which characters do you like best?” It’s a tough question, because our characters are like PackorthePanther[The]LGkids. You love them all the best. They all have their own unique problems and world view that you’ve shared and you love them for it. But, if you drill down, there are those that stand out just a teeny bit. I recently created one of those. Lindsey Vanessen in my new release, Wolf in Gucci Loafers. Lindsey is a mass of contradictions. He’s a very effeminate, gay man, and at the same time is a champion athlete. He loves bubble baths and beautiful clothes, but he’s a vicious fighter with rapier, gun, or hand-to-hand, and he’s an aggressive top in bed. Of course, he’s also half human and half werewolf! I introduced Lindsey in my book earlier this year, The Pack or the Panther, and everyone loved him so much — including me — that he had to have his own story. A friend of mine who is also a passionate fan of my books told me yesterday, “I think you have a hero to rival Roan (Roan Black in the Genetic Attraction series).” He then said, “I wish all your characters were real — especially Lindsey. I’d like to k now him and have him as a friend.” I can’t think of a higher compliment.

What are some of the book characters you wish were real?

Here’s a snippet of my delicious Lindsey in action —

Excerpt: WOLF IN GUCCI LOAFERS by Tara Lain — MM paranormal

Available Dreamspinner Press   AMAZON   ARe

Socialite Lindsey Vanessen wants someone WolfinGucciLoafersLGto love who will love him back—an impossibility for a gay, half-human, half-werewolf. Too aggressive for humans, too gay for wolves, and needing to protect the pack from human discovery, Lindsey tries to content himself with life as a successful businessman. But when someone starts kidnapping members of wealthy families, Lindsey meets tough cop Seth Zakowsy—the hunky embodiment of everything Lindsey wants but can’t have.

Seth has never been attracted to flamboyant men. What would the guys in the department think of Lindsey? But intrigue turns to lust when he discovers Lindsey’s biting, snarling passion more than matches his dominant side. It might mean a chance at love for a cop in black leather and a wolf in Gucci loafers.

Lindsey came up beside him. “So, let me look at you.” The guy stood back and regarded Seth up and down like a piece of prime beef. “Yes, well, lovely, but maybe a little casual for the occasion. I know it sounds like an athletic event, but really it’s more”—he waved a hand gracefully—“shall we say, social?” He walked around Seth, making a “hmmm” sound.

“Look, I don’t care about the social niceties. I just want to catch a f***ing kidnapper.”

“Ah yes, yes, but we catch more flies with—Armani.” He laughed. “Come with me.”

It wasn’t a trial to follow that butt.

Lindsey threw open a door, and Seth walked in behind him. “Holy shit.”

Lindsey turned and placed a hand on his chest. “Yes, dear, I know. Decadent. It may be the sign of a devolving civilization, but this is my closet.”

This was a room his family home could fit in twice. “Department stores don’t have this many clothes.”

“Dear, dear. We never shop at department stores.” He waved a hand down his body. “Obviously, nothing that fits me is going to fit you.” He touched the epaulet on the leather jacket. “Those shoulders. Oh my.” He sighed. “Anyway, I happen to have a blazer that was delivered to me in the wrong size. My guess is that it’s divine plan, because I think it will fit you perfectly.” He walked to the racks of clothing and pulled out  a deep-green blazer.

Seth touched the material. Butter. Shit, not his style. He shook his head. “I don’t need this. Thanks, though.”

Lindsey hooked the jacket on a display hanger and crossed his arms. “Listen, dear. You asked me to take you to this event. I’m also very interested in you capturing these horrible people. After all, their victims are my friends. So do this my way.” He pointed at the coat. “That jacket cost half your annual salary. No one is going to smell cop when I get through with you. They’ll talk to you because you’re a friend of mine and that’s all they need to know. Understand?”

Seth frowned. “What do I say when they ask what I do?”

“You work for the government in a classified capacity. End of story. You could tell them, but—”

“I’d have to kill them.” He cracked half a grin. “That’s pretty ingenious.”

“But of course.”

The Purrfect Read

“I’m Rasik of Tribe Gahiji. My people turn into caracals and make up a large tribe of shifters on the Middle Continent of planet A’ata. I’m an excellent hunter and use my skills to help my brother, Taj, who is leader of our tribe. We are allies with Tribe Fahari — a mixed group of shifters that includes my beautiful, stubborn Kalya. I’ve known Kalya since childhood and have come to love her with an adult male’s passion. She can’t resist mating with me forever.

I’d like to welcome my fellow cats…at least those of you who haven’t come to make trouble in Allie’s domain. Why don’t you introduce yourself and tell us your story?”

(Tribal Shift by Allie Ritch)

“Hello. I’m Alain. Alain Bellarose. I was last a human in the 16th century in France where a powerful witch saw me dying and gave me the gift of change. I became a witch’s familiar in the form of a black cat, and since that time I have served the witch’s community by magnifying their powers. I’m Aloysius, the greatest familiar in the world! But now — ah, a huge blast of power has transformed me back to a human and I have met Luke, the beautiful and mysterious. In his arms, I know how wonderful it can be to live as a man. But Luke doesn’t know my secret. And without Aloysius, the witches are vulnerable to attack. As a human I have no power. As a cat, I can’t know love. I must choose. Witch or man? Cat or human? Power or love.”

(Cataclysmic Shift by Tara Lain)

Rasik: “A difficult choice, Alain. Sometimes we need power to protect those we love.”

“Power is everything. I am Mashaka. With my fellow leopard shifters, I will build Tribe Nemera into the strongest tribe ever seen. No one will stand in my way.”

(Tribal Shift by Allie Ritch)

Rasik: (ignores the larger cat and turns to the twins)

“My name is Evan and I’m a painter. I’m also a tiger. How is that possible? (Grins.) I’m a tiger shifter. At will, I can change my shape and allow the animal within to take over. I’ve got a twin brother, Ian. We do just about everything together. He’s a surveillance tech and good with gadgets. Me? I have a hard time using my smart phone. It’s all good. We balance each other out.

There are some things even twins have a hard time sharing—women. Or rather, one woman in particular. I’m a tiger and I’ve got a voracious sexual appetite, but there is one woman I want to claim. Her name is Kaia. I’ve loved her since the moment I met her. Thankfully, Ian does, too. I did mention we do everything together? To be complete, we need to mate with the same woman at the same time. Tall order, don’t you think? But I’m convinced Kaia can handle not only the both of us, but our tigers, too.

Tigers get what they want.”

(Dual Threat by Wendi Zwaduk)

“Did someone mention women? My name is Asad, and I enjoy my pride of female lion shifters, especially when they come into season. Children are to be protected. I will hunt down anyone who harms our young ones to the ends of A’ata. Mashaka, I am coming for you and your leopards.”

(Tribal Shift by Allie Ritch)

Rasik: “Perhaps having so many strong male shifters in one place isn’t the best idea. I suggest we go back to our own territories. Those who wish to learn more about us can visit us there.”

Character Profiles: Hearts and Flour by Tara Lain

HeartsandFlour_ByTaraLain_453x680To Micah Truveen, raw, vegan food is his religion. So when his devoted customers show up with white flour cupcakes, Micah could kill. Then Micah comes home to find his boyfriend, Dharamaram, in bed with someone else. He throws the rat out and agrees to go to his friend’s orgiastic anti-Valentines party where he meets a gorgeous cross-dressing guy who gives him a night to remember.

Southerner Quentin Darby wishes he could stop wearing women’s clothes. He so wants to live up to his grandmother’s glowing opinion of him, he’s never even told her he’s gay. And now there’s Micah who makes him wish he could just be who he is. But Micah finds out that Quentin is the baker responsible for the plague of cupcakes afflicting the community! And Dharmaram adds a little blackmail to the mix. Can two hearts rise above the flour?

***

Micah Truveen

Physical Description:  OK, so Micah kind of knew that people thought he was good looking. He couldn’t see it himself. He was tall enough, but kind of skinny and mangy looking. His dark, almost black hair would not stay out of his eyes. His lips were too full and cheeks too lean. Using his bike as transportation made him fit—hell, he even had a six-pack—but altogether he looked like a survivor from a desert island.

Attitude Description:  He felt like someone just hit him in the head with a baseball bat. Good nutrition wasn’t about most of the time. Jesus. The body constantly produced new cells. Give them one excuse to alter that DNA negatively and you were on your way to disintegration. Annie knew that. He’d taught her in classes and conversations over kale and spinach juice. You are what you f***ing eat. It was just that simple. Cupcakes weren’t food! God, kill me now.

Quote:  Yes, he believed in the benefit of organic, raw food. But he also wanted to believe in being happy. In falling in love. And if he didn’t get the organic, biodegradable stick out of his ass, he was going to lose the best thing that had ever happened to him. Quentin did it for him. No explaining it, but there it was.

Quentin Darby III aka Queen

Physical Description:  Queen — “Queen” was clearly the correct title. His pale blonde hair hung around his shoulders, decorating the lacey blouse that opened over delicate collarbones and the slight swell of his imaginary breasts. That face. Wow. He wore maybe a little mascara and a touch of pink lipstick, but that was all. Amazing. Even without the eyeliner and brilliant red lips, the illusion of Queen’s femininity was complete.

Quentin — He dropped the blouse on the chair beside the bed then reached back and unfastened his bra. When it came off, Micah’s eyes widened. “Beautiful.”

Quentin grinned. “Why? There’s not much to see.”

“Your chest is very masculine. Well-muscled but boyish. So pretty.” Micah reached up and ran his hands over Quentin’s nipples. “Oh my.” The buds tightened in anticipation. Micah smiled and pulled back his hands. “What’s next?”

Quentin giggled. “You’re enjoying this I think.”

“Oh my, yes, as you would say.”

“OK.” Quentin reached up and slipped his thumbs under the edge of his wig.

Micah gasped. “Wait. I thought that was your hair.”

“No. It’s just a very good wig. Shall I leave it on?”

He shook his head. “No. No, I want to see.” Quentin glanced at him sideways.

“You could be disappointed.”

“No. I want to see.”

Quentin pulled the wig off. His own hair was so light, he didn’t have to cover it to wear the wig. As the wig came off, he shook his head like a dog in the water and his curls flew around his head.

Micah smiled. “I’ll be damned. How could you be prettier with your own hair? But you are.”

Quote:  He turned to her. “Dharmaram is his boyfriend, Mary Beth. He’s gay. He came to see his gay boyfriend. Not you. Not me. This is not South Carolina where gay men pretend they’re ‘just not the marrying kind.’ You have to get used to that, dear. We both have to get used to that.”

Gasping for breath, he stopped outside the store. Locked. Of course. It was only eight thirty in the morning. At least Dharmaram’s class didn’t start until nine. If only Quentin would come here to the shop right after he dropped off his grandmother. Or maybe even before. Oh God. What if he went in and Dharmaram confronted them together? No warning. Just a smack in the face. Maybe he should run to the yoga studio? He took two steps down the pavement—

“Micah?”

He turned back to see that beautiful face. A beautiful face and body—dressed in men’s clothes. He’d seen Quentin as Queen. He’d seen Quentin naked. But this was the first time seeing him as a man.

“Wow.”

Of course, that masculine image was slightly compromised by the fact that Quentin wore an apron over his jeans and T-shirt. An apron covered in flour and dough. Micah wanted to lick it off. The first processed food he’d had in years.

Quentin wiped his hands. “What did you want?”

His eyes wouldn’t focus. He just wanted to keep staring at that loveliness.

“Maybe I could get one of your raw cupcakes?”

“You came here before opening for a cupcake?”

Micah shook his head. “No. I have something to tell you. Something pretty awful.”

Quentin frowned. “Something more awful than you going back to your yoga teacher a few hours after we had sex?”

Micah breathed out hard. “It’s related to that. Where can we talk?”

“There’s people baking in the kitchen. You know, baking that poison I make and force on people?” He stood very upright.

“I’m truly sorry for that. Just, please, let me tell you what’s happened.”

“OK.” Quentin stepped aside and pointed to the back. Micah walked into the shop, assailed again by the sweetest of smells. No second sweetest, after Quentin.

Quentin walked through the door that led to the kitchen and Micah followed. He turned right and stepped into a small office with a desk, computer, and a filing cabinet. Quentin pointed to a straight-back chair across from the desk. He took the desk chair. “So what did you want to tell me?”

Whew. Face-to-face, this was tough duty. His heart beat so hard he could feel it in his toes. “I, uh, I really care about you.”

Who knew Quentin’s face could get that angry. “You sure have a unique way of showing it, sugah.”

“Wait. I’ve done a bunch of dumb things, and I’m not sure which is dumbest. First, I did that whole priggish song and dance about the cupcakes being poison when I should have been telling you how much I admire you and appreciate how you take care of your grandmother. And I really want to know why you created those raw cupcakes—” he held up a hand “—but first I have to tell you about my other idiot moves. The reason you saw me with Dharmaram is because he was blackmailing me. He figured out that the beautiful woman he saw me with is the grandson of his most proper southern lady student, and he threatened to tell Mary Beth about you if I didn’t take him back in. What you saw was him moving his stuff into my guest room. That’s guest room.”

Quentin’s mouth literally hung open. “But why did you do that? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Micah shrugged. “I knew if I told you, you’d immediately come out to your grandmother, and I didn’t want to force you to do something you didn’t want to do.”

“So you’ve been hosting that snake in the grass on account of me?” The blue eyes widened to saucer expanse.

Micah shifted in the chair. “I was. But that’s why I ran here so fast this morning. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I woke up this morning and he was climbing in bed with me. I threw him out again.”

“Good.”

“Not good, because he’s going to go straight to Mary Beth and—”

“Who’s going straight to me, darling?”

The soft southern voice came around the partly closed door followed by a curly head and blue eyes that sparkled just like her grandson’s.

He would have smiled but fear seemed to have frozen him solid. What could they say? All he could do was follow Quentin’s lead.

Character Profiles: Genetic Celebrity by Tara Lain

Tommy Riley loves cooking and the simple life. But his passion for Angie “Booky” Edelson is anything but simple. Beautiful, ambitious, hard-driving and 10 years older than Tommy, Booky represents all the things Tommy has tried to leave behind. Besides, she only seems to love him for his food! Then Tommy’s boss brings home Shay Shaleen, a pierced, tattooed, androgynous street kid for Booky to turn into a top male model. Tommy sizzles for the beautiful guy but Shay gets caught up in the flattery of a famous fashion designer. Why does Tommy have to fall for two people who can’t love him back? Is there a recipe for blending with these genetic celebrities?

Today, multipublished author Tara Lain tells us about the characters of her new book, Genetic Celebrity, which is Book 4 in her Genetic Attraction Series. Genetic Celebrity is a MMF Menage with Food, and these characters certainly sound good enough to eat. Check out their profiles and scroll down to read an excerpt from Genetic Celebrity.

rest of my family for those same things…I guess in my family those things are
threatening, but in you they stimulate and excite me. Anyway, most importantly,
I realized that while they may not love me the way that I want, they do still
love me in their way. And I figure I have enough love for all of us.”

DESCRIPTION FROM BOOK:  And Tommy. God, there was a guy with no self-consciousness. Bet he didn’t even know how cute he was.

She studied his feet and slowly raised her gaze to his freckled face. Her hand shook his as she looked over her shoulder. “So Angela, you talk all the time about his cooking and never mention he’s pretty as a picture?”

It would be nice to tower over her, flex his big alpha-male muscles and watch her swoon. Too bad it wasn’t gonna happen in this life. Five feet eight and his cooking were all he had, so he’d better use them.

ANGIE “BOOKY” EDELSON

QUOTE:  “You know, I kind of think I want something I’ve  never had. Something not written down in Mama’s book of marriage.”

DESCRIPTION FROM BOOK: Her gleaming black hair fell to her shoulders
like a curtain of ebony, and the liquid brown eyes peered out from under
straight bangs. Bold features, they called them. A long straight nose and full
lips. She was slim but curvy with generous breasts and a round butt. Yeah, if
you saw her, you never forgot her. And the in-your-face appearance matched a
personality just as big.

SHAY SHALEEN

QUOTE:  Tommy took a deep breath. “So Shay, after we’ve finished with all the wonderful things Booky has lined up for us, we can do anything you want. What will it be, darling?”

Shay snuggled into Tommy. “I’d like to go home.”

Tommy smiled all the way to his soul.

DESCRIPTION FROM BOOK:

Holy shit, he was beautiful. You could barely see it under all the studs and hoops and that scrofulous cap, but the kid was a stunner. His eyes were big but turned up at the corners like they were crowded by his impossibly high cheekbones. And those eyes were blue, baby. Like Paul-Newman-to-die-for blue. …….

Slowly his hand came up to the cap and pulled it off. Pale, almost white-blond hair fell around his face. Who would have guessed? The kid’s brows and lashes were light brown. On one side of his head, his hair was long, nearly to his shoulder. The other side was shaved, leaving a light stubble of platinum against his head. But the hair was real. You could tell looking at the roots. This kid had this hair, every woman’s dream, stuffed under a black cap.

Excerpt R: Genetic Celebrity by Tara Lain; MMF Menage with Food!

Warm. Mmmmm. Shay snuggled into the heat. Wait. Heat? Why? He opened his eyes. Very carefully he moved his butt. Crap. He knew a fully spronged dick when he felt it. A nude dick! Where was he? California. Supposedly a-f**king-lone.

“Ah, mon cher, are you finally awake?”

“What the f**k!” He leaped to the side of the mattress and off the bed to full standing before his brain even registered he was moving. He groped for the light, knocked over something like the radio, and finally found the switch. He blinked against the flare of light and the sight of Louis de Chauvigny propped on his elbow in the center of the bed, bare-assed naked and fully erect. His smile looked like one of those crazy clowns that scare kids.

Shay looked for a weapon, saw his discarded tennis shoe, grabbed it, and brandished it toward Louis. “What the f**k are you doing here?” He waved the shoe. “No, I don’t want to know why you’re here. I just want you to get out of here before I do something that will get me arrested…again.”

Louis looked about as concerned as a whore at a political convention. “Ah, my dear, control the drama. I am here because I paid for the room, the plane flight, and in fact, for you. I knew if I could just get you to a comfortable place away from negative influences, you would see all that I am offering.” He reached down and stroked his cock that was maintaining its stiffness against all odds. The bastard probably got off on a little violence.

“I was hired by DeMarco.”

He smiled. “Oh yes. I also own DeMarco. We keep it very quiet because our brands are so very different and I don’t want to compromise de Chauvigny with such a rock-and-roll aesthetic.”

Sh*t. Why did he keep getting bought? “I don’t care. Get the f**k out of my room.” His hand tightened on the shoe.

Louis sighed. “Oh, come on, Shaleen. This isn’t your room. It’s mine. You’re a beginning model. I have done a lot for you, and you have much more to gain. You’ve been a prostitute, for God’s sake. What possible difference can it make to you? And I want you. I would not have gone to all this trouble for many men.” He patted the bed. “Come on, let’s f**k.”

For a split second what the man said made sense.

Then Shay shook his head. F**k. Not in this life. Not anymore. He angled toward the door so he could get the most force with the fewest obstacles. His arm came back. He heard a sound from the door. Louis’s mouth opened to yell. He threw the shoe straight at the f**king designer’s head as Booky’s voice rang through the room. “What the f**k is going on here?”

Louis ducked, and the shoe missed him by an eyelash. Tommy caught it. “Good throw.”

Crap. Crap. Shay looked at the naked Louis and up at the two people on earth he wanted to like him. No, he wanted them to love him. What did they think?

He knew what they had to think. This looked so f**king bad.

With her hands on her hips, Booky looked like Wonder Woman. “What exactly are you doing here?” She flicked her fingers. “Like that?”

Louis lay back on the mussed bed. He looked relaxed, but that boner was long gone. “Did Shay not explain he was coming to California to see me? We were just playing a little game before intercourse. I so love a threat with my f**king.”

Shay couldn’t catch his breath. “No. Not true. No.”

“Well, of course it’s true. How else would I be here at this hour”—he waved a hand down his long naked body—“like this, as you say.”

Shay shook his head until it rattled. No. No. This couldn’t happen. How many times had some crappy God given him a particle of hope and pulled it away like a rug under a running dog? Yeah, dog. That was what he was in this world.

He looked at Booky, who glanced back and forth from him to Louis. Shay could see what she saw. A robe on the chair. Who would she believe? F**k, who would anyone believe?

He leaned his head back and screamed.
